Someone contacted me about sharing what I thought was the biggest challenge a social media manager faces. The answers would be posted in a roundup post. However, the person never answered my email inquiry about the deadline, so I decided to answer the question on Savvy-Writer.
A social media manager wears many hats such as writing and posting content, answering comments and messages, and much more.
With so much responsibility, it’s no surprise social media managers face challenges every day. And if you want help, there’s no shortage of social media marketing tips available.
Let’s explore the biggest challenge a social media manager may face. The answer may surprise you.
The Biggest Challenge a Social Media Manager Faces
The biggest challenge a Social Media Manager faces in his/her day to day life is the uncertainty of social media. For instance, you have no control over algorithms because you don’t own Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube. Accept it and do the best you can.
Whether or not a social network becomes obsolete or if the company goes out of business isn’t up to you. Make sure your company uses the best social media networks for your company. You want to be where your audience hangs out!
If people respond to your post, contest, sponsored ad, etc., and it gets your company attention, that’s great. Sometimes these things are trial and error, and you won’t know if they’re a total success until it’s over. Learn from both your successes and failures and tweak your strategy along the way.
You won’t know if a Facebook Live video or Instagram story will be a success until you do one.
You can’t control the budget for social media because someone in upper management most likely sets it. Use the money strategically. If your campaigns are a success, you may ask for additional funding.
Stop Trying to Control Everything in Digital Marketing
The only thing a social media manager can do is embrace the unknown of digital and social media marketing and do his or her best.
Stop posting on social networks that aren’t performing for your company—you need to be where your clients and customers are. Develop relationships first and sell without selling. If you’re desperate or pushy, you may push sales away.
Finally, have fun with social media! After all, the keyword is “social.”
Show your humanness. Use humor. Ask your customers or clients to take a survey. Create a contest. Why? Because people like to win things. Admit when you’ve made a mistake and fix it.
People want to get to know a company or brand on a ‘human’ level because we buy from people.
Final Thoughts on the Challenges of Being a Social Media Marketer
If you’re the type of person who likes to control everything, you may want to work on releasing the need to be a control freak because you can’t control search engine or social media algorithms, policies, and more.
Control what you can, which is your social media content and attitude. Do your best because that’s all you can do.
