The Origins of Common Sense

As a writer, I’m fascinated by the origins of words. I have a fondness for Latin and other languages and would like to learn how to speak many languages. This will come in handy if I’m a contestant on The Amazing Race! I’m intrigued by the word common sense and decided to research it. Where does it come from? Who first said it? Why did they say it? If “common sense” is so common, why do so many people lack it? Merriam-Webster Online defines common sense as “beliefs or propositions that most people consider prudent and of sound judgment, without reliance on esoteric knowledge or study or research, but based upon what they see as knowledge held by people in common.”

According to Aristotle, “the common sense is an actual power of inner sensation (as opposed to the external five senses) whereby the various objects of the external senses (color for sight, sound for hearing, etc.) are united and judged, such that what one senses by this sense is the substance (or existing thing) in which the various attributes inhere (so, for example, a sheep is able to sense a wolf, not just the color of its fur, the sound of its howl, its odor, and other sensible attributes.” Leave it to Aristotle to be so insightful. I wonder what Plato and Socrates think of common sense?

Perhaps some people are more ‘tuned-in’ than others. Perhaps they’re more sensitive or intuitive than others; therefore; see things which others cannot. If common sense means “paying attention to the obvious,” what blocks people from seeing it? What blocks freelance writers from using common sense when they accept a writing assignment without a contract? May be they had a momentary lapse in reason!

A little common sense can go a long way. Freelance writers, can use their common sense when working with clients. Don’t assume that your clients know what they want. Don’t assume your clients will proofread your work — that’s part of your job. Make sure you reference your sources and give credit where credit is due. Don’t people aren’t paying attention to what you’re writing because they are.

Freelance writers need common sense. Don’t accept a writing project without a contract. Don’t sell yourself short and accept any writing project. If something doesn’t feel right, listen to your common sense and gut instinct and walk away from a potential client. Trust that you actually know the answer. Get out of your head and into your heart!

Blogging Heroes

Image via Wikipedia

Most freelance writers offer blog copy writing services because more and more businesses are creating blogs to attract potential customers. Let’s face it — the internet is saturated with blogs. You want to stand out among the crowd and attract visitors who’ll turn into customers. Make sure the blog is engaging while providing solid information that is actually helpful. There’s nothing worse than finding a blog that doesn’t add value. Remember, time is valuable and people value time.

Freelance writers keep blog posts between 300-700 words. Explain to business owners why it’s important to keep blog posts short and to the point. Sometimes a longer post will be necessary but most of the time it’s not. Also, make sure links open in a NEW WINDOW; otherwise you could lose readers and potential customers. Most people don’t like to click the ‘Back’ button because it’s something they have to do; they have enough to do in life. Help them out and have links open in new windows!

Freelance Writers Can Learn from the Soap Opera One Life to Live

Jessica Buchanan

Image via Wikipedia

You may think that you can’t learn from watching TV, especially soap operas, but you can. Since I’m interested in writing for TV and films, I watch television programs and movies. I’m enjoying One Life to Live which can be watched at your convenience at ABC.com. The writing is hilarious when it comes to the Jessica/Tess Buchanan Brennan storyline. Jessica suffers from multiple personalities (this isn’t funny) and one of her alter egos is Tess, a fast talking, party type of gal who’s extremely different from Jessica. Jessica/Tess is played brilliantly by Bree Williamson who delivers the lines with gusto. As an actress, she’s very lucky that the writing is spot on! I’m quite certain she’ll receive an Emmy nomination and win for her performance. One Life to Live draws viewers each week because the writing is very good. Therefore, freelance writers’ can learn a few pointers from this long-time fan favorite soap opera.

Writing for television is different from writing blogs, articles, fiction, and non-fiction. However, the commonality is writing. Your writing will fall flat if it doesn’t resonate with your target audience. If you’re interested in becoming a #1 Freelance Writer or #1 Ghost Writer, your writing must impact business owners and readers. What emotions will be felt? What message are you trying to get across? What will make them want to pick up the phone and call you to be their freelance writer? It’s important to be mindful of the style, tone, and voice of your writing.

All business owners and publishers are not the same. Some may look for humor in your writing while another will require a more serious tone. It depends on the target audience. Please remember that! Not every client will want a funny blog post or article. For example, your client could be a medical doctor specializing in cancer research. The tone of your blogs and articles will be professional and to the point with an undercurrent of compassion. Freelance writers remember that all target markets are not the same.

If you want to stretch yourself as a freelance writer, watch TV shows and movies. Pay attention to character development and dialogue. Think of your blogs, articles, brochures, bios, newsletters, and other writings as characters. How will you develop them? What can you do to make them come to life? How can you get the ‘target audience’ to feel emotion? How can you write effortlessly and make the words flow and leap across the page? Ponder these and other questions while you watch television shows and movies. You’ll be surprise how your writing improves. Who says watching TV can’t be educational?

Rebecca

P.S.

Did you know that soap opera actresses and actors shoot 100 pages or more per day? This is why James Franco, who guest starred on General Hospital, stretched himself as an actor. Of course, it probably helped his writing (he published a book) and schooling as well.

Industries That Will Hire Freelance Writers the Most

Sam's Club

Image via Wikipedia

Freelance writers, do you want to know the industries that are hiring the most in 2011? Would you like to know where your freelance writing clients are? Your clients can be found in the following industries: office staffing, tourism, education, restaurants, car dealerships, doctors, home-building,
warehouse clubs and super-centers, nursing homes and elderly services, and supermarket and grocery stores. If you’re savvy at sales and marketing, you can land one or more writing opportunities within these industries.

Industries that freelance writers can market to in 2011

Office recruiting and staffing. You know who they are: Kelly Services, Accountemps, Adecco, Spherion, Aerotek, and others will be recruiting and staffing for their clients. Why not take advantage of this and see how you can improve their web copy and print copy? Perhaps they don’t have a blog or the current posts aren’t that great. You could help them change that.

Tourism. This is good news for travel writers! Travel increases when economic conditions level off or improve. However, baby boomers will never stop traveling; therefore, tourism won’t be going away anytime soon. Hint: The U.S. remains a top travel destination spot for foreigners.

Education. Education remains important. Public schools, colleges, and universities will experience a surge in new jobs.

Restaurants. Are you a secret foodie? You’re in for a treat if you are. When the economy recovers, people will begin to eat out more. You could become a freelance food and wine critic or write for restaurants. If you’re a good writer, you could experience a ‘perk’ here and there such as coupons or a free lunch or meal on your birthday!

Car dealerships. Do you love to go from 0-60 in less than 2-seconds? If you love cars, you could write for dealerships in your area and around the U.S. How cool would it be to ‘test drive’ the latest models and then write a review?

Doctors. Paging Dr. A. Freelance Writer! Baby boomers are getting older and require more medical facilities to care for them. This means more doctors and specialists will be needed now and in the future. If you have an interest in health care, you could become the ‘expert’ medical freelance writer.

Home-building. Who loves real estate? I do! People can talk trash about the real estate industry all they want, but what goes down must go up. Unless the ‘power players’ from major countries such as the North America, Europe, Africa, and others get together and tell people to stop reproducing, the real estate industry will make a comeback.

Warehouse clubs and super-centers. Do you like to shop at Sam’s Club or Costco? You could become their next freelance writer. Consumers like to save time and money and will continue to flock to these stores.

Nursing homes and elderly services. Baby boomers will become senior boomers. This means they’ll be entering traditional nursing-homes and assisted living. New establishments could begin to emerge and these businesses will need help with their writing.

Supermarket and grocery stores. Americans love to eat, and they’ll begin to frequent their choice supermarket and grocery stores more and more. These organizations can use your help with copywriting and email marketing to their consumers.
