The Power of Positive Marketing and Thinking

I just read a brilliant blog post by Carol Tice on the WM Freelance Connection which outlined the steps freelance writers can take to earn more profits. The key is to stop doing what you’ve been doing and hoping for the same results.

Most freelance writers, including me post resumes and 30-second elevator pitches on websites such as Craigslist, hoping to attract clients. Do the types of clients you desire frequent Craigslist or other sites like it? Probably not. How do you find the clients and writing jobs you want? The answer is to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. This is what I’m doing and you can do it too!

Marketing you and your writing is the key to finding the desirable writing jobs you want. Get out there and network. Go to Meetup.com to find local networking groups. Subscribe to your local newspapers either in print or online or both and see what opportunities are available. Attend at least one networking event per week. Remember to listen to people because networking is about building relationships with people. Get to know the other members and you’ll succeed at receiving opportunities and referrals.

You may be discouraged that you’re not earning the income you desire. Clear your mind of ‘negative chatter’ once and for all. Journal your thoughts and purge your mind of self-defeating and self-sabotaging thoughts. It may not be easy at first but once you realize that your mind is filled with ‘thought pollution’ that is hindering your income potential, you’ll be quick to fill your mind with positive thoughts that will make a difference in your life.

Many freelance writers write for $15 or $25 because they feel they have to do so. How can they not write for content mills? The rent and other bills must be paid. When you’re starting out as a freelance writer, you may consider writing for content mills in order to earn some extra income, but do you really want to make a habit out of it? Probably not. Like other freelance writers, you have hopes and dreams of earning $1.00 or more per word writing meaningful articles that help people everywhere. The time has come to realize your dreams — it’s not too late!
