How to Hire the Right Ghost Writer for Your Projects by Asking Simple Questions

You may think I’m about to tell you to hire me, Amandah Tayler Blackwell, as your ghost writer, but I’m not.

Let’s face it; not every freelance writer or ghost writer (even me), may not be the ‘right’ fit for you and your project.

What is a Ghost Writer?

Wikipedia defines a ghost writer as “a writer who writes books, articles, stories, reports, or other texts that are officially credited to another person.” Dictionary.com’s definition of a ghost writer is “a person who writes one or numerous speeches, books, articles, etc., for another person who is named as or presumed to be the author.”

The bottom line is a ghost writer writes material and or edits and proofreads completed materials without receiving ‘written’ credit for it. Usually. Some celebrities, Maureen McCormick aka Marcia Brady, for example, have no problem revealing their ghost writer’s name. But this is rare.

Who Would Hire a Ghost Writer?

CEOs, celebrities, entrepreneurs, political leaders, and others hire ghostwriters to write or edit various materials from autobiographies to blog posts. The film industry uses ghostwriters write a film score composition and or songs and lyrics.

Simple Questions to Ask a Ghost Writer

How long have you been a ghost writer? 

There’s nothing wrong with hiring a ghost writer that doesn’t have 25 years experience. In fact, you may want to hire a writer that is up-to-date with technologies such as SEO writing and social media. But you want to make sure the writer you hire understands what it means to be a ghost writer. Believe it or not, some writers who call themselves ghost writers don’t understand they won’t receive written credit for their work.

Can you show me samples?

This is tricky because I established that a ghost writer is writing for someone else. However, there’s always an exception to that rule which is a ghost writer may be able to show you some samples if they have written permission from their clients.

Here’s a tip: Interview a couple of ghost writers before you hire one. Take a day or two to make your decision. Don’t rush it. Your projects deserve the best ghost writer for them.

What do you enjoy about being a ghost writer? What do you like to write?

Most writers enjoy reading and writing which is why they’ve chosen the career path of the writer. However, most writers may prefer to work on writing projects such as non-fiction, fiction, screenplays, YA, short stories, poems, etc. They could have a preference for specific genres of writing such as romance, chicklit, memoirs, travel, eBooks, children’s books, etc.

What word processing program do you use?

A ghost writer probably uses Word; however, there are other word processing programs such as Microsoft Works, Lotus Word Pro, WordPad, and many others. Make sure you hire a ghost writer that uses the word processing program you know and understand.

How do you communicate?

Most writers are ‘hooked up or plugged-in’ to their computer or laptop every day. Some ghost writers may prefer to communicate via email because they can answer your questions efficiently and quickly. Others will use Skype, and IM program, phone, or text. Be clear about how you like to communicate. If the ghost writer is close to you, perhaps you can meet in person from time-to-time.

What is the estimated completion time?

What’s your deadline? Do you even have one? Don’t hesitate to tell a ghost writer that you need your project completed by a specific date. Being vague with a deadline doesn’t work. Ghostwriters usually have more than one client; therefore, if you find a writer that you believe is perfect for your book, eBook, screenplay, etc., be clear about your deadline date.

What are your fees?

All writers have different fees for a variety reasons. Some have more experience in one niche topic or have more experience over all. Hire a ghost writer whose fees you can pay. Please be up front about your budget. There are plenty of writers out there. You’ll find one that works for you!

By the way…Sometimes it pays to spend a little more on writing services than you originally wanted to. You really do get what you pay for. It’s better to hire a writer who understands your project and what it means to be a ghost writer.

Hiring the Right Ghost Writer

Now that you have the simple steps to hiring the ‘right’ ghost writer for your projects, you can breathe a sigh of relief when you start looking for a ghost writer. It won’t seem like a scary process or something you dread. You may want to ask other questions in addition to the ones above.

There are some ghost writers who may try to take your project in a different direction, but it’s up to you to speak up and reiterate that it’s not their project, it’s your project. Make sure there’s a clause in a contract that either party can walk away at anytime should the project take a turn in the wrong direction. The ghost writer should have been paid one half or a third up front and can’t come back to say you didn’t pay them for their work thus far.

Be clear and concise about your writing project. Be honest about what you can afford to pay for writing services. Also, write down the characteristics and skills you’re looking for in a ghost writer. Conduct a Google search or ask your business associates to refer a writer.

Traffic may be trickling in and your comments section may not be as eventful as a Tony Robins seminar, but your blog posts can go viral. Please don’t lose hope. Take a breath and continue reading.

You may think it takes determination, hard work, patience, and luck. Maybe you think it’s a dream to have your content go viral.  But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Your dream can become a reality. And… there’s no need to say “Abracadabra!” or spin around three times while chanting.

There’s a reason why Cosmopolitan, tabloids, and other publications like these sell magazines and receive traffic. The headlines are irresistible. They’re alluring and hook and suck readers in like a Venus Flytrap! Who would not be able to read a post with the headline “American Manufacturing Wants Back In Your Pants?” It’s clever and thought provoking. Readers have no choice but to read the article/post.

Use power words such as:

  • Unexpected
  • Improved
  • Imagine
  • Tested
  • Slash
  • Cutting Edge
  • Secrets
  • Stunning
  • Better
  • Popular
  • Challenge
  • Daring
  • Soar
  • Rare
  • Strange
  • Effective
  • How To
  • Useful

Strong adjectives grab readers’ attention and make them want to take action like click on your blog post, even ‘tweet’ it. Strike an emotion, a connection with readers and they’ll click on your headline and read your post. They’ll tweet it, Digg it, post it to Facebook, stumble it, pin it, etc.

An awesome beginning

Think of the beginning of your blog post like Act I (first 10 pages) of a screenplay which consists of the following:

  • Introduction of main characters
  • Establish main environments
  • Set the atmosphere or mood
  • Establish a time frame or period
  • Show a way of life
  • Provide a backstory
  • Present the antagonist

You may have watched a movie where the beginning started with an anecdote or quote. The “Star Wars” movies have great beginnings. They begin with a ‘roll-up’ where you learn about the backstory and context of the films. You can use this concept for the beginning of a blog post.

Another beginning blog post technique is to ask a question which stimulates curiosity and thinking. You could also open with a powerful statistic. Readers love data!

What do I use? I prefer the “Morrow Opening” to increase blog traffic. What is it? You put yourself into a reader’s shoes and ask, “Does this apply to me? Is this person going through the same thing I’m going through?” Most readers want prefer blog posts that ‘speak’ to them. They want to know that you understand their problem. They want to know you’ve been through what they’ve been through. Remember what New York Times best-selling author T.  Harv Eker says, “You’re in business to solve problems and sales and marketing.” This is why it’s important to know your target audience inside and out.

Short and simple sentences

Blogging has evolved throughout the years and so have our attention spans. Most people are pressed for time and want valuable information quickly — they can get in and get out. However, if you rethink your blog strategy and implement short and simple sentences (think copywriting), readers will read your blog post. Why? Because it’s easy to digest, it’s understandable. It’s easy to follow.

Compelling and useful content

There are millions of blogs on the internet. Content must pack a punch. It must impact readers in a way that makes them come back for more. It’s content that readers want to share with everyone they know. It’s content that converts them into loyal clients or customers. This is why it’s important to know ‘who’ your target audience is and what they want. I can’t emphasize that enough.

Don’t be afraid of posting controversial blog posts. Handle the backlash or feedback with grace and dignity. There isn’t a rule written somewhere that everyone will agree with your beliefs, ideas, and opinions. Take a chance and be real, be authentic. Readers can see through the B.S. anyway. You may as well have some transparency.

Show off your personality, style, and tone. Use your company’s voice. If you’re an entrepreneur, use your voice. If you don’t know what your ‘voice’ is grab a recorder or your iPod and record a short sound bite. How do you sound? How do you want to sound? Are you being real? Don’t be afraid to show your human side, everyone has one.

An ending that brings it home

You now have the five simple ways to make your blog post viral. As you can tell, the easiest way to end your blog post is to tie it back to your beginning. Or ask readers a question. Or ask them to doing something like “Click Here” which takes them to free report or email subscription form.

Blogging will continue to evolve over time. You can either welcome the changes with open arms or not. It’s your decision.

But… if you want to reach your audience, you may want to think about embracing the new way of blogging. Hire a freelance writer if you have to. You don’t have to do this alone.

If you’re willing to see blogging in a new light, your blog posts will attract readers. It doesn’t matter if you’re small business owner or solo professional. Shift your perception and you’ll unlock the blog traffic floodgates.

Instead of asking, what do you have to lose? I ask you, what do you have to gain? What does your audience gain? Think about it.

Customers and potential customers want quick, valuable information that will help them solve whatever problem(s) they have. Give them what they want!

After you’ve polled or surveyed your customers, think about blog topics.

Example … If your company is a graphic and web design firm targeting small businesses, you could have blog posts on the following:

  • How to get your small business noticed with a logo that stands out.
  • How color psychology can boost web traffic.
  • How a redesign of your blog can boost blog traffic.

The next step is to write headlines that stop readers’ in their tracks.

Using the above ‘graphic and web design company’ example above, possible headlines for the blog post topics are:

Company X’s Logo on Billboard Stops Rush Hour Traffic

Company X’s Website Makeover Attracts Celebrity Shoppers

Company X Big Fat Blog Traffic Results in 20 Million Hits

Use short and simple sentences.

Use bold headings and bullet points.

Don’t use industry jargon if your audience won’t understand it.

Tip: Think of writing blog posts like writing screenplays. There’s a beginning (Act I, introduction; plot point or big event), middle (Act II, conflict; arc of the story; midpoint), and end (Act III, the resolution).

Remember, blogging isn’t about your company. It’s about helping your customers solve whatever problems they need solving. Blogging is also a good sales and marketing tool.

Optimize content with SEO.

Search engine optimization or SEO can be both time consuming and a pain in the neck. You want to optimize your blog posts. But on the other hand, you want to provide valuable content to readers. The good news is you can do both. However, I suggest putting more emphasis on content.

You can research keywords using Google AdWords Keyword Tool or another program to find the ‘best’ keywords/phrases for your blog. Select keywords/phrases and test them in blog posts. An “A/B” testing is a good way to analyze traffic to see which blog posts received the most blog traffic.

In addition to using Google Analytics, check out HitsLink. The company provides you with in-depth analysis of your blog/website. Reports are easy to download. In my opinion, HitsLink doesn’t seem as cumbersome to use as Google Analytics.

Find the right ‘tone and voice’ for your blog.

Keep your target audience in mind when you think about tone and voice. Tone is the ‘author’s attitude (or mood) towards a subject. Voice is the personality, point of view, or style of writing. Examples of voice are:

  • Funny
  • Upbeat
  • Serious
  • Trendy
  • Dark
  • Snarky
  • Matter-of-fact

It’s usually recommended that blog posts have a conversational, friendly voice. However, there’s a difference if your blog’s audience is for those in finance organizations vs. parents of toddlers.

Conduct research on what your target audience is reading. See what others are writing in your industry. Test blog posts to see which ones receive the most comments and traffic.

Extra Blog Traffic Tips 

1. Who is your target audience? Are they chefs or stay-at-home moms? If you don’t know ‘who’ your target audience is you can’t provide them with awesome content. This is where newer businesses stumble. They don’t know ‘who’ their target market is.

2. What problems are you solving? What problems do your customers need solving? How do you find out? Take a poll or survey using Survey Monkey, a provider of free online survey solutions. SurveyMonkey offers customers more features with one of their paid subscription plans.

3. Once you know ‘who’ your target audience is build a relationship with them. Or, continue to develop the relationship with a successful blog that provides killer content. Hook visitors with brilliant content, and they’ll come back for more.

Warning! If you use these three simple steps to increase blog traffic, your website could be busted overnight. You have a webmaster in-house, right?
